Sanchez Vicario: "Spain is also a difficult rival for Switzerland"

Madrid, 28 Sept.- Emilio Sánchez Vicario, Spain's Davis Cup captain, told EFE Radio that: "Spain is also a difficult rival for Switzerland" and that he is looking forward "eagerly and enthusiastically" to the first round tie in the World Group.

"They were one of the difficult opponents we could have got. You've just got to accept it and bear in mind that, although they are playing at home, Spain is also a difficult rival. I think we have to view the tie with enthusiasm, we can make things difficult for them," stated the Spanish captain.

Sanchez Vicario will try to surmount the handicap of having to play on a fast surface against the team led by Roger Federer, the world number one. "They're certainly not going to put us on clay. They will choose a hardcourt, just how fast will depend on them, because a very fast court would suit Rafa Nadal very well indeed. We will try to have a good start to the season on indoor courts and reach the tie in good form so as to be very competitive," he said.

The Davis Cup captain hopes to find a good doubles pair before 9th February when the tie starts. "The doubles is a preoccupation, but there's plenty of time and a pair can be formed. It's a difficult problem to solve because the Spanish are good singles players and go in for doubles very little. I hope to obtain a good competitive pair," he said.

Sanchez Vicario also gave his opinion about Roger Federer, considered one of the best players ever: "I don't think Federer is the best ever yet, but he is very young and technically I would say he's the best in the past decade. He's a text book player, one to imitate, from whom much can be learned."

Emilio Sanchez had his doubts as to whether Federer would play the tie against Spain. "He never plays in the first round matches and I don't know if he'll play. I don't think they can make him either," he stated.

Despite the difficulty of the task, Sanchez Vicario remembered a maxim: "The harder it is, the more satisfying it is to win," he concluded.

A win would mean Spain has to face either the Czech Republic or the United States. EFE

Joan Solsona (Marca) http://www.marca.com/edicion/marca/tenis/es/desarrollo/693410.html

Federer and Nadal go head to head in Davis Cup

ROME (Reuters) - The 2007 Davis Cup draw produced a potential showdown between Swiss world number one Roger Federer and his closest rival Rafael Nadal of Spain on Thursday.

Switzerland won home advantage in the first-round draw and are likely to opt for a fast court to counteract the claycourt supremacy of the Spanish and particularly Nadal, who has not been beaten on the surface since April 2005.

Spain have met Switzerland four times in Davis Cup play and hold a 3-1 lead, but all the encounters were before the era of the Federer-Nadal rivalry.

"It is obviouly a tough draw but I am sure Switzerland will also be thinking they are unlucky to have drawn the worst possible rival as well," the president of the Spanish tennis federation Pedro Munoz told Spanish media.

"With the spirit we now have in this team I am confident we can beat whoever we play, wherever it may be," Munoz added.
