Sánchez Vicario: "Nadal es especial"

Emilio Sánchez Vicario, capitán del equipo español de Copa Davis, se muestra esperanzado en que España resuelva la eliminatoria frente a Italia y logre la permanencia en el Grupo Mundial después de que la primera jornada terminara con una victoria para cada equipo. Además, elogió a Nadal.

El responsable del conjunto español elogió el carácter de Nadal. Da la sensación de que el empuje del tenista manacorí no tiene seguimiento en el resto de jugadores. "No todos pueden ser como Rafael Nadal, porque él es especial. Lo da todo en la pista y tiene una conexión muy directa con el público", indicó Emilio Sánchez Vicario, que comparó al balear con su hermana Arantxa.

El catalán confía: "Es una situación similar a la de Arantxa con Conchita Martínez. Que parecía que Arantxa se entregaba en cada punto. Conchita también lo hacía, aunque diera una sensación diferente. Eso pasa con Robredo y con otros, que también se dejan todo, aunque haya otra percepción en el público", argumentó el capitán español.

Sánchez Vicario explicó la elección de Tommy Robredo, incluido inicialmente para los tres días del enfrentamiento contra Italia. "Elegí a Robredo porque tiene una trayectoria muy buena y porque está entre los seis o siete mejores del mundo. Eso en primer lugar. Además, ha entrenado muy bien estos días, con un nivel alto de juego. Pero el deporte es como es. No se gana sólo por el hecho de ser favorito. Los partidos se ganan en la pista", argumentó Sánchez Vicario tras la derrota de su número dos contra Filippo Volandri.

Y siguió argumentando: "Yo sabía que Volandri iba a estar a un gran nivel. Viene de hacer final en Bucarest y tiene fresca la competición. Es un gran jugador", dijo Sánchez Vicario. "Ante Volandri, Robredo no ha sabido entrar en el partido. Incluso ha terminado cabizbajo, sin saber qué hacer", reconoció el capitán de España, que prefiere esperar antes de determinar, definitivamente, la configuración del equipo para los próximos compromisos. "En Copa Davis, la recuperación psicológica es fundamental porque un día o dos después tienes otro partido. Tienes que recuperarte. No he hablado todavía con él. Cuando hablemos veremos que opciones tomamos para el dobles. La intención es mantener el que habíamos designado, con él y Fernando Verdasco", insistió Sánchez Vicario.

Nadal gets Spain back on track

Rafael Nadal calmed the nerves of the home side by beating Andreas Seppi60 64 63 to bring Spain level with Italy at one point apiece in its Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group Play-off tie in Santander.

Nadal, the world No.2, walked onto the beachside court with his team still reeling from Filippo Volandri’s straight sets victory over Tommy Robredo in the opening rubber and knowing that defeat to Seppi would put Spain on the brink of relegation from the World Group. Within minutes he had restored the crowd’s faith in its players by racing to the first set 60, and though Seppi eventually made him work hard for his win, Nadal’s first Davis Cup match in front of his home crowd in nearly two years proved to be a happy return for the 20-year-old Mallorcan.


Seppi struggled bravely, but Nadal too good

Seppi did not allow the two-time Roland Garros champion to have things all his own way though. He broke the Nadal serve in the opening game of the second set and, for long stretches, kept pace with arguably the world’s best clay court player. Nadal had to bide his time until late in the second set before breaking back, but when he did so and went on to go two sets up, the match effectively moved permanently beyond Seppi’s reach. The Italian fought obstinately but he and his small band of supporters were eventually drowned out by an increasingly boisterous Spanish crowd, anxious to show Nadal its noisy appreciation.

Nadal, who wore the red and yellow of the Spanish flag right down to his wristbands, rewarded their loyalty by putting on something of a show early in the third set, covering the court with sometimes miraculous ease and firing winners past Seppi, each one punctuated with his trademark leaping and fist pumping. Seppi showed admirable resolve by breaking back, but at 3-4 down his serve once more buckled under relentless pressure from Nadal. Seppi mustered two break-points in the final game but Nadal would not be denied, sealing victory after two hours and 33 minutes with a delicate dropshot.

Italy off to an ideal start

Earlier, Volandri had got his team off to an ideal start with a 63 75 63 win over a below-par Robredo. Volandri put one of his most inspired Davis Cup performances to upset the form book and quieten the crowd. He seemed to react far better to the circumstances, putting Robredo under pressure from the first ball to the last and taking advantage of nervous, stuttering tennis from the Spaniard.

With the tie now certain to go into a third day, much now rests on Saturday’s doubles, which is scheduled to feature Danielle Bracciali and Giorgio Galimberti for Italy against Robredo and Fernando Verdasco. However, under the ITF’s Davis Cup rules, both captains can change their doubles pairings up until an hour before the start of play, which leaves Spain’s Emilio Sanchez and Italy’s Corrado Barazzutti with some thinking to do. Sanchez may feel Spain has a stronger chance of winning the middle rubber if Nadal plays alongside either Robredo or Verdasco; Barazzutti, however, may be more inclined to stick with his established doubles team – Bracciali and Galimberti have not lost any of the four ties they have played together.

Saturday will also see a special ceremony on court in Santander as Spain says goodbye to faithful Davis Cup servant Alex Corretja, who will hope to mark his official retirement by watching his successors push Spain within sight of victory and nearer World Group safety.

Nadal victory puts Spain level with Italy

World number two Rafael Nadal put Spain level with Italy at 1-1 in their Davis Cup World Group playoff on Friday after overcoming a determined Andreas Seppi 6-0 6-4 6-3.

The Spaniard, decked out in red and gold especially for the occasion, raced through the first set taking advantage of a string of errors from the nervous-looking Seppi.

The 22-year-old Italian, ranked 69 in the world, struck back in the second set however, and opened up a 4-1 lead breaking Nadal twice. The French Open champion regained his composure, got to grips with Seppi's serve and powered his way back into the match.

He broke Seppi's serve in four consecutive games to take the second set and move into a 3-0 lead in the third, but the stubborn Seppi refused to lie down.

The Italian pulled it back to 3-3 before Nadal was able to take the match in just over two and a half hours.

"Sometimes when you win the first set so easily it is difficult to maintain your momentum, especially when your opponent starts playing better," Nadal said.

"But after a difficult second set I was I control for the third, and the important thing is I secured the win."

Filippo Volandri had given Italy a surprise lead by beating world number seven Tommy Robredo 6-3 7-5 6-3.

Volandri, ranked 31 places below his opponent, looked sharper throughout and was quicker into his stride holding on to an early break to take the first set in blustery conditions.

The players twice traded breaks during the second before the 25-year-old Italian broke Robredo once again to serve out.

Robredo has a poor record in Davis Cup, with seven defeats from 10 before today, and his head dropped after losing an early break in the third.

On Saturday Robredo and Fernando Verdasco are set to play Daniele Bracciali and Giorgio Galimberti in the doubles rubber.

Italy have a 7-5 lead over Spain in Davis Cup but lost 3-2 at the same stage, last September.

Rafael Nadal logró el primer punto para España en la eliminatoria contra Italia tras vencer a Andreas Seppi en tres sets (6-0, 6-4 y 6-3) en la carrera por lograr la permanencia en el Grupo Mundial de la Copa Davis, una competición que, lejos de significar una carga para el manacorí, supone un honor y un privilegio.

No existe incomodidad para Nadal. A pesar de ser un tenista acostumbrado a disputar los títulos de los grandes torneos, la cita con España para jugar la Copa Davis tiene un lugar reservado entre los esfuerzos del número dos mundial. "¿Un marrón la Copa Davis?. Jugar en tu país, ante tu gente, en una ciudad como ésta y defendiendo a España es un privilegio. Es algo especial para mí. La Copa Davis es mi competición favorita", dijo Nadal para disipar las dudas.

El tenista español sacó a España de la incertidumbre en la que se había metido tras la derrota de Tommy Robredo frente a Filippo Volandri con anterioridad. "Seppi es un jugador difícil. Parece que no hace nada, que juega medio apático. Pero si no estás pendiente puede crearte un problema. Puede hacerte daño. Llevo mucho tiempo sin jugar en tierra", indicó Nadal.

"Empecé con un poco de nervios por lo importante que era ganar. Pero empecé fuerte. Porque me hacía ilusión empezar bien", añadió el número uno español. "Todo comenzó muy rápido ante Seppi. Como todo el mundo desearía. Y sin darme mucha cuenta estaba con 6-0 a favor. Cuando no hay puntos largos todo parece fácil. Luego, el panorama cambió. A veces pasa eso", indicó Nadal, que no se mostró crítico con el viento.

"Me ha molestado, claro, pero es igual para los dos", rechazó el tenista manacorí, que justificó la derrota de su compañero Tommy Robredo. "No estaba tan claro que Robredo fuera muy favorito contra Volandri. Yo creo que estaba a un cincuenta por ciento", añadió Nadal, que no quiso valorar la idoneidad de jugar el partido de dobles. "Yo estoy a disposición del capitán. Pero tenemos confianza plena en Tommy Robredo y Fernando Verdasco", zanjó Nadal.
