Q. You now have to play Rafael Nadal in your last match. Your thoughts on playing against Rafa? Obviously, if you want to make the semis, you're going to have to win.

NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: Yes. It's like my last chance to come in semifinal. Like I try to fight like today. Like should be I need to win also today. I never know what's happen against Nadal because also he try to fight, he try to run. He play I think not so fast like Blake. Play more topspin, a little bit slow, but also long rally. That's was for me better if I win in two sets, not three, make it like today.

Yeah, only one tough against him is he is lefty. Because to make topspin to backhand, play more topspin high, it's a little bit get problem with this surface because it's not so fast here. He can run, he can play well. That's was from my side, I need to play like Blake against him first round, try to play fast and short points.

GRANADA ESPERA EN DICIEMBRE A LOS OCHO MAESTROS DEL TENIS NACIONAL

www.rfet.es

Nadal Comes Good with Win

Eurosport - JS - 15/11/2006 16:57

Rafael Nadal started tentatively against countryman Tommy Robredo in the Masters Cup Gold group but finished strongly to win 7-6 6-2 and reignite his semi-final hopes.

The Spaniards are good friends and seemed willing to give one another points early on, unforced errors making up a fair percentage of those gained.

Robredo, in good form and fitness despite losing to Nikolay Davydenko in the opening group match, arrived talking up his chances of beating Nadal. He moved around the court fluidly, making life difficult for the world number two.

Robredo came within a whisker of breaking Nadal early on and was successful soon after. Nadal's stokes were not quite enough to beat the quick feet of Robredo and he pounced to take a 4-2 lead.

Nadal was forced into action and immediately unleashed a fight-back, moving onto 0-40. He then impossibly saved a shot from Robredo for a second time in the game, breaking back.

Nadal out the effort in but could not find the winners he craved. Despite holding break point at 4-4, the set went to a tie-break.

Both had played their way into some form and appeared pumped up, but Nadal raced into a 4-0 lead as Robredo struggled to cope with his sudden ferocity. There was no way back and he ultimately triumphed 7-2.

That was a cruel blow for Robredo and it showed in the second set. He failed to hold his first service game while Nadal did so twice.

The crunch moment for his chances arrived with the score at 3-1. Robredo held three break points and on the second threw away an easy volley chance before Nadal came back to take the game and with it the hopes of victory for the world number six.

The match finished 7-6 6-2, but that score-line belied the intensity with which Robredo fought at the end. He survived three break points with an ace and some absolutely vicious forehand and backhand strokes.

However, Nadal won through and will face off against Nikolay Davydenko on Thursday in a winner-takes-all contest to decide qualification for the semi-finals

Rafael Nadal boosted Tennis Masters Cup latecomer James Blake into the first of the semifinal spots at the season wrapup event on Wednesday thanks to a 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 Gold group victory over fellow Spaniard Tommy Robredo.

The all-Iberian struggle paved the way for Blake - last man to qualify into the eight-strong field at the Qi Zhong stadium - to become the first to reach the weekend final four with a 2-0 record from wins over Robredo* and Nadal.

Double French Open champion Nadal found his range in a draining 61-minute first set against Robredo, like Blake making his debut at the elite season wrapup.

It was the first win in Shanghai for Nadal, who lost his opening match to Blake and had to withdraw injured before his first match a year ago.

Nadal, second in the world behind Roger Federer, traded first set breaks in the sixth and seventh games with his compatriot before the set headed to the tiebreaker.

Nadal excelled under pressure, converting on the first of four chances to claim the opener.

That success opened the floodgates for Rafa, who raced to 3-0 before his compatriot could react.

"I played a complete match," said the winner. I'm very happy to finally win a match here. It was a very important win and I feel great. I played my shots well and was serving with confidence."

The 20-year-old Nadal saved three break points to reach 4-1, then fought off a Robredo last stand in the concluding game as the challenger saved three match points before falling after one hour, 41 minutes on a return long.

Nadal fired 26 winners, 22 unforced errors and converted on three of nine break points. Roberdo had a poor day with success on just one of six break points against his celebrated young compatriot.

Nadal improved to 58-11 on the season while Robredo stands 48-30 after his fourth career loss to his countryman. Robredo can no longer reach the semifinals but will play one final round robin match against Blake.
