In the lead up to the last Grand Slam of the year there is media mania surrounding the world's best players. Rafa is no exception. On Monday, after hitting up with James Blake in New Haven, Rafa made his way to New York and had a manic afternoon of meeting with the press in his allocated Media Day. Between 3pm and 9pm Rafa met with seven different media outlets; clearly everyone wants a piece of the world number two! Sports Illustrated, the NY Times, the IH Tribune, People Magazine, TIME Magazine, Gillette World Sports and CBS all met with Rafa with just a half hour breather for him in the middle! Rafa and one of his major sponsors, KIA, recently extended their alliance and he will now be the global ambassador for KIA until 2008. Rafa said: "It's great to have this opportunity to represent a world-class automaker such as KIA. I will do my best to promote the KIA brand across all of its countries by continuing to improve my play on the court." Tuesday sees Rafa continue to promote KIA by doing a KIA Commercial shoot from 9am till 6pm. On Thursday and Friday fans will have the opportunity to go and see Rafa at appearances he is making in New York City. At 12 noon on Thursday, Rafa will unite with ATP's number one, Roger Federer for a Nike event at Golfsmith Department Stores. The same time on Friday and Rafa will be at Grand Central Station for a Babolat appearance, with fans welcome to go along and see him. Biographie :
Rafael Nadal Parera (né le 3 juin 1986 à Manacor, sur l’île de Mallorca, España) est un joueur de tennis espagnol. Il a commencé sa carrière en tant que professionnel en 2001 et fait actuellement partie de l'équipe d'Espagne de Coupe Davis qui a remporté l'épreuve en 2004. Classé n°2 mondial depuis le 25 juillet 2005, soit depuis 160 semaines consécutives, il est proclamé N° 1 mondial le 18 aout 2008, au lendemain de sa médaille d'or aux J.O de Pékin.
Son oncle Miguel Ángel fut joueur du FC Barcelone et de la sélection espagnole durant les années 1990. À l'âge de quatre ans, un autre oncle, Toni Nadal, juge que Rafael est doué pour le tennis et devient alors son entraîneur. Il a également appris à son neveu à jouer avec la main gauche : Rafael étant naturellement droitier, Toni Nadal estimait que son revers à deux mains tirerait profit d'un bras droit fort.
Rafael Nadal est, au même titre que Björn Borg, considéré comme l'un des plus grands joueurs de terre battue de tous les temps, établissant en effet des records majeurs sur cette surface à seulement 21 ans. Il détient à ce jour 81 victoires consécutives sur terre battue, la plus longue série de victoires sur une seule surface de l'histoire du tennis chez les hommes. Le 8 juin 2008, il remporte son quatrième Roland Garros consécutif contre Federer en finale. Il reste donc invaincu dans ce tournoi du Grand Chelem.
