El maestro de un campeón dentro y fuera de la pista

El medio centenar de personas que acudieron a la Cámara de Comercio fueron testigos de las directrices que desveló Toni Nadal para formar a su sobrino y pupilo: "Hay que marcarse unos objetivos a corto y a largo plazo y hacer un gran esfuerzo para aprender en todos los aspectos, no sólo en el deportivo". Su carrera, según explicó el preparador, tiene tres etapas: "La primera es la de la ilusión por jugar a tenis; la segunda es la de la formación, que es la más dura; y la última es la actual como tenista profesional".

Toni Nadal: "I'd be happy for Rafa to be second again in 2007"

PALMA.- Toni Nadal has it quite clear: “I would be happy for Rafa to end next year as number two behind Federer." It is not that the Manacorian champion's uncle and trainer does not believe in his capabilities but that, as he has stated on other occasions, Roger Federer is "on another plane/level".

This is how Nadal put it during a conference on education and sport at the Mallorcan Chamber of Commerce. With him were the president of the Chamber of Commerce, Joan Gual de Torrella, and the Baleares Government sports minister, Pepote Ballester.

Toni was the inaugural speaker in a series of public discourses with the participation of specialists in diverse subjects, whose experiences can also be applied to the field of education and training. The event has been organized as a complement to the training programmes and courses normally offered by the Chamber of Commerce.

"Rafa being second is of great merit because Roger Federer is probably the best tennis player of all time. He has already beaten him several times, too, but there's no hurry to be number one because it's already a miracle that he is where he is," he affirmed.

Linking his nephew's experience to the conference theme, Nadal explained that he has always set objectives for Rafa and that he has instilled in him "the need for a spirit of sacrifice, that he should set himself short and long term goals, and that while he plays everything he does should lead somewhere, that his career should have direction."

RECUPERATION BEFORE RETURNING TO THE TOUR

On the purely sports side, the Manacor player's mentor said that "using the special insoles to play is prejudicial to him, it's a handicap that doesn't help him, but he has to use them so that his knees don't suffer." He also said that Rafa has now started a period of recuperation after his success in the Davis Cup and will soon be back on the ATP tour.

Last of all, Nadal exhorted those present at the conference to give great importance to education and training in order to become specialized and have professional success, in whatever field it might be.
