Two Madrid fans ask Ronnie to have mercy on them in the Madrid-Barça match
MD arrange for Madrid fans Rafa Nadal and Feliciano Lopez to meet Ronaldinho in Stockholm
By Cristina Cubero / STOCKHOLM
It all began at breakfast time. Feliciano Lopez asked for a second capuccino with his new trainer Albert Costa while Rafa Nadal dealt with the umpteenth request for an autograph. Feliciano asked if Dunga had included Ronaldo in the Brazil team, if Robinho was there, well, for news of the Madrid players.
"I would love to meet Ronaldinho," he then confessed, betraying his team's colours. Rafa commented that he had once been with Ronnie, "at the Mundo Deportivo centenary party but there were lots of people and cameras". Then he said, "I've got his autograph, but I don't know if it is false or not, I friend got it for me... "
At eleven in the morning, Mundo Deportivo offered to arrange for Ronaldinho to meet the tennis players. There they were in the same city (Stockholm) in the same hotel (Grand Hotel), only separated by one floor (the Brazilians on the second and the tennis players on the third). Brazil were training at five o'clock, Rafa had a TV interview at eight, so we arranged to meet at half past eight.
Feliciano arrived first accompanied by his parents, who are both keen football fans, and Rafa appeared right on time. Ronaldinho? A telephone call, and he was there. We looked for a discrete place: the ATP office in the hotel lobby. There began the conversation that we have reproduced below and which shows just how normal these three sports stars are.
Ronaldinho to Nadal: “You look much smaller on the tele... "
Nadal to Ronaldinho: “You too, you don't look so well built/muscular on the pitch... "
Ronaldinho to Nadal: “It's because of my nickname. As they all call me Ronaldinho it seems as if I should be smaller.." (laughter)
Feliciano to Ronaldinho: “Are you tired of so much travel?”
Ronaldinho: “The journey from Kuwait was a killer, because we travelled in the early hours of the morning and the flight took more than four hours. I'm feeling a bit better now... "
Feliciano: “Do you like tennis?”
Ronaldinho: “Yes, I follow you a lot on television. You're never at home, are you? I always see you in this place and the other. I really don't play very well. I've got a problem with my backhand..."
Feliciano: “There, another one!!” (more laughter)
Ronaldinho: “And do you like football?
Nadal: “A lot. I follow closely what's happening in the matches, the news. My Uncle Miquel Angel played for Barça for years."
Feliciano: “He also played in the World Cup in Korea." (which Ronaldhino played in too)
Ronaldinho: “But you're Madrid fans, I've seen you Rafa many times in the president's box at Bernabeu." (more laughter)
Rafa: “Well, I can't go to the Nou Camp, the last time they said: '¡fuera, madridista!' (Get out of here, Madrid fan!) (laughter). I've always been a Madrid supporter.. Hey, do you know what's the matter with Robinho? I think he's the best Madrid has."
Ronaldinho: “I don't know, he plays very well with us (Brazil)."
Feliciano: “Last year when Barça won 0-3, I also stood up to applaud your two goals in the Santiago Bernabéu”
Nadal: “See and behave yourself this year, that 0-3 was a disaster."
Ronaldinho: “With Capello, it will be more difficult to score goals against Madrid..."
Feliciano: “What's the atmosphere like at Barça?”
Ronaldinho: “Fantastic. That's why we win. That's the key.
Simon, one of the ATP press people took some photos for the lads while they were talking. Ronnie had already eaten, Rafa and Feliciano had chosen a specialist fish restaurant to do so.
An hour later, they were still chatting. They will meet again. Perhaps in the Bernabeu. Both tennis players are sure they will be in the Masters Madrid final "and then, off to cheer for Madrid" but they hope "things turn out well for" Ronnie. With yet more laughter, they took their leave of one another.
