Tennis - ATP - Sydney : Nadal et Blake annoncés

En prévision de l'Open d'Australie 2007, Rafael Nadal vient d'annoncer qu'il participerait au tournoi de Sydney du 7 au 13 janvier prochain.

A l'instar de James Blake qui défendra son titre et de Lleyton Hewitt, "régional de l'étape", qui ont eux aussi confirmé leur participation, l'Espagnol numéro 2 mondial au classement l'ATP et seulement âgé de 20 ans, foulera donc pour la première fois de sa jeune carrière les courts du Centre International de Sydney, située sur la côte est australienne.

Le tournoi de Sydney se dispute traditionnellement la deuxième semaine de janvier, juste avant l'Open d'Australie, premier des quatre tournois du Grand Chelem de la saison.

Nadal tipped as Sydney drawcard

WORLD No.2 Rafael Nadal is poised to return to Australian tennis in the Medibank International in Sydney in January.

The Spanish tyro is expected to be revealed today as the major drawcard for the January 7-13 event at the Sydney International Tennis Centre.

The left hander has not played in Australia since stretching Lleyton Hewitt to five sets in a centenary Melbourne Park classic 21 months ago.

The dual French Open champion and 2006 Wimbledon finalist missed the Australian circuit this season due to chronic foot problems.

Nadal, 20, will be named along with Hewitt and the cream of the women's game for the integrated Sydney tournament.

Arch-rival Roger Federer and Andy Roddick are expected to follow a familiar path to the Australian Open, via the Kooyong Classic, as Nadal chases more vital rankings points in Sydney.

Defending champion James Blake is expected to return to the Olympic precinct, where world No.18 Hewitt will chase a fifth title.

Women's champion Justine Henin-Hardenne and world No.1 Amelie Mauresmo have traditionally used the Medibank as a lead-up to Melbourne Park.

Sam Stosur and Alicia Molik are prospective Australian entrants.
