The Tournament
Since 1881, a bevy of tennis stars have blessed Canadians with their impressive talent. The world famous Canadian Open, the oldest ongoing tournament after Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, continues to present a first grade organization. From Toronto to Montreal every other year, the Rogers Cup is an important leg of the ATP Masters Series. With $2.45 million dollars U.S. prize money, this event attracts the world's best tennis players.
The impressive list of past champions on the Canadian stop of the professional tennis circuit bear such legendary names as John McEnroe, Bjorn Borg, Ivan Lendl, Andre Agassi and Roger Federer. At the inauguration of Toronto's Rexall Centre in 2004, 41 of the 50 best men's players in the world played for a record Toronto crowd of 165,508 spectators. In 2006, the Rogers Cup enjoyed the best attendance in its history, attracting 173, 484 spectators to Montreal’s Uniprix Stadium. Not only is that number a Canadian record, but it is also a world record for a week-long tennis tournament.
The top 45 players now entered in the tournament
Sophie Prégent, Spokes-person
June 28, 2007 - Today, Tennis Canada unveiled the official entry list of the Rogers Cup presented by National Bank, which will be held at Uniprix Stadium from August 4 to 12, 2007. With a total of US $2 450 000 in prize money, this important tournament of the ATP Masters Series will welcome the world’s greatest players, as the top 45 men are automatically registered. The stage has therefore been set for Roger Federer of Switzerland, Rafael Nadal of Spain, and Andy Roddick of the United States. Federer, world number one for over the past three years, will certainly seek to reclaim the title he won last year in Toronto. Still, “The Boss”, as he is known, will have to contend with his main rival, Rafael Nadal, the three-time French Open champion and winner in Montreal in 2005 – his first career hard court title.
“Again this year, Rogers is proud to join Tennis Canada in offering Montrealers a tournament of international calibre. The event has evolved a great deal throughout the years to become what it is today: nothing less than a mainstay in Canadian sports,” commented Jean Laporte, President, Eastern Canada, Rogers Communications Inc.
Sophie Prégent, spokesperson for the 2007 tournament
Actress Sophie Prégent, recognized for her many stage and screen roles, will take over for Jean-Nicolas Verreault as spokesperson for the tournament. When presented to the media and guests, Ms. Prégent, an avid fan of the Rogers Cup for many years, could barely contain her enthusiasm! “The Rogers Cup will be heating up this summer. Both the weather and the rallies promise to be red-hot!” declared Ms. Prégent. “I am exceedingly happy to accompany you as the official spokesperson. I sincerely hope to see you there!”
A new draw and programming
This year, some of the main draw matches will be presented on the second day of the tournament, which is normally reserved for the qualifications. The initiative, which the ATP will be trying out in Montreal, is a great perk for August 5th ticket holders. Also new this year is the main draw, which will include 56 players instead of the usual 64. The tournament’s top eight players will therefore be exempted from the first round. In addition, spectators will be able to watch the final match of the junior championship (under 18 years old) on Friday, August 10th.
Besides being one of the most important tennis tournaments on the planet, the Rogers Cup presented by National Bank stands out for its unique programming that marries sports and culture.
