Rafa starts slowly but …

August 8, 2007 - No.2 seed Rafael Nadal of Spain struggled for one set before taking control of the match and knocking off Russian Marat Safin, 7-6(4), 6-0 Wednesday night at the Rogers Cup presented by National Bank.

The No.2 player in the world, playing in his first singles match of the tournament, had to get used to the wind and Safin’s serve before finding his groove. The first set was a real battle, with both players hitting spectacular shots followed by unforced errors.

It was lost opportunities by Safin in the tiebreak that made the difference. After losing the first set, the 2000 Canadian champion was just a shadow of himself, giving away the match.

It was the first ATP match between Safin and Nadal.

Nadal is in the hunt for his seventh title this year and in order achieve the feat, must defeat 2005 Rogers Cup semifinalist Paul-Henri Mathieu of France in the third round.

Mathieu easily disposed of Croat Mario Ancic, 6-3, 6-2. Ancic, who is still recovering from a bout of mononucleosis that has kept him out of action since February, was far from the form that put him in the top-10 last year.

In other second round action, Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis recovered from a blip in the second set before defeating Robin Haase of the Netherlands, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.

In the round of 16, Baghdatis will confront fifth seeded American Andy Roddick, who advanced with a win over Arnaud Clément of France.

Also advancing were No.4 Nikolay Davydenko of Russia, with a win over Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen, and No.12 Tommy Haas of Germany, who eliminated American Michael Russell.

In the third round, Davydenko faces compatriot Mikhail Youzny, while Haas has a meeting with Czech Radek Stepanek.

NADAL VENCE SIN PROBLEMAS A SAFIN

EL PRIMERO. La primera víctima del manacorí ha sido el ruso Marat Safin que dio problemas en el primer set y se derrumbó en el segundo.

El tenista español Rafael Nadal alcanzó la tercera ronda del torneo de Montreal, sexto Masters Series de la temporada, tras derrotar al ruso Marat Safin en dos mangas por 7-6 y 6-0, en un encuentro donde sufrió en la primera manga.

El manacorí, segundo favorito, tuvo que trabajar mucho en este parcial donde el ruso, pese a comenzar por detrás, reaccionó y apoyado en un efectivo servicio, estuvo cerca de hacerse con el parcial, que cayó definitivamente del lado del balear en la 'muerte súbita'.

A partir de ahí, ya no hubo partido, Nadal se asentó, Safin se 'marchó' de la pista, y el número dos del mundo no tuvo problemas para pasar de ronda, donde se enfrentará con el francés Paul-Henri Matthieu, verdugo ya del croata Mario Ancic y del argentino Guillermo Cañas.

El tenista español comenzó controlando a un errático rival con una rápida rotura y llegó a dominar por 4-2, pero cedió su saque y desde entonces el poder del ruso con el servicio (ocho 'aces') y el bajón de Nadal igualaron el choque. Por ello, se llegó al 'tie-break' donde el balear fue más sólido y se impuso por 7/4. El ex número uno del mundo acusó el golpe y se descentró, lo que permitió al manacorí jugar con más soltura y arrollarle en el segundo parcial por 6-0.

Pocas alegrías

La victoria de Nadal fue una de las alegrías de la 'Armada' junto al buen triunfo de Fernando Verdasco, que realizó una nueva remontada, este vez ante el siempre complicado francés Richard Gasquet, al que acabó derrotando por 3-6, 7-6 (7), 6-4 y ahora se medirá al canadiense Frank Dancevic, que se impuso al estadounidense Wayne Odesnik por 6-3 4-6 y 7-5.

En cambio, los dos siguientes jugadores tras Nadal en el ranking, Tommy Robredo y David Ferrer, séptimo y decimotercer favorito respectivamente, cayeron ante el eslovaco Dominik Hrbaty (6-2, 6-4) y el argentino David Nalbandián (7-6, 6-1).

Además, el suizo Roger Federer celebró su vigésimo sexto cumpleaños con una victoria (7-6 (2) y 7-6 (3)) sobre el croata Ivo Karlovic en la segunda ronda, en un apretado choque donde no se registró ni una sola bola de 'break' y donde Karlovic, amparado en su saque (16 'aces'), tuvo sus opciones.

El helvético, que tardó una hora y veinte minutos en deshacerse de Karlovic, se enfrentará en los octavos de final al italiano Fabio Fognini, quien protagonizó una de las sorpresas de la jornada, tras derrotar al británico Andy Murray (15) por la vía rápida, al endosarle un doble 6-2.

En otros de los resultados de la jornada, el americano Andy Roddick, quinto cabeza de serie, se deshizo en esta ronda del francés Arnaud Clément por 6-1 y 7-6 (5). También selló su billete a octavos de final el ruso Nikolay Davydenko, cuarto favorito, que tuvo que emplearse a fondo para eliminar al finlandés Jarkko Nieminen.

NADAL Y HEWITT YA SABEN GANAR COMO PAREJA DE DOBLES

Por primera vez en sus carreras, Rafael Nadal y Lleyton Hewitt no estuvieron separados por la red, como rivales y como los feroces competidores que son. Nadal y Hewitt, que ya se entrenaron juntos varios días en el Masters Series de Hamburgo, en mayo, antes de protagonizar una épica semifinal allí mismo, debutaron como pareja de dobles en el Masters Series de Montreal. Y encima, ganaron por un doble 6-4 a los canadienses Bester y Duclos.

La pareja de diablos, de Australia y de Manacor, sólo cedió una decena de puntos con su servicios, sin breaks. El próximo compromiso de este dúo hipercompetitivo ya tiene más vuelo: se enfrentan a la pareja israelí Erlich-Ram, que acaba de jugar la final en Washington, y ocupa el octavo puesto en la lista de dobles de 2007.

Curiosamente, Roger Federer también juega dobles en el Masters Series canadiense (Rogers Cup), junto a Yves Allegro, su gran amigo suizo. Federer y Allegro ganaron en primera ronda a los españoles Almagro y Ferrer (4-6, 6-3, 10-8), y ahora les toca verse las caras... con los gemelos Bob y Mike Bryan, la mejor pareja del mundo.

De madrugada, Nadal debería haber cerrado su primer turno individual: su primer enfrentamiento de siempre con Marat Safin. Nadal sigue apareciendo con vendaje compresivo en la rodilla derecha. Verdasco salvó dos puntos de partido ante Gasquet, en el segundo set, y ganó por 3-6, 7-6, 6-4. Moyá, Robredo y Ferrer cayeron ante Baghdatis, Hrbaty y Nalbandián. ­

Nadal sigue adelante en Montreal

El español Rafa Nadal, segundo cabeza de serie, derrotó por un claro 7-6 (4) y 6-0, al ruso Marat Safin, en partido de la segunda ronda del torneo Masters Series de Montreal.

El español derrotó al ruso en algo más de hora y media de juego y ahora, en tercera ronda, se medirá al francés Paul Henri Mathieu, quien derrotó al croata Mario Ancic, por 6-3 y 6-2.

Rafael Nadal, que ganó en Masters Series de Montreal en 2005, inció esta madrugada su participación en el torneo canadiense con una cómoda victoria frente al ruso Marat Safin (7-6 y 6-0).

Hoy, hacia las 21.00 h, se verá las caras con el francés Paul Henri Mathieu, número 23 del mundo y en trayectoria ascendente desde Wimbledon.

También ha pasado ronda el madrileño Fernando Verdasco, que se deshizo del francés Richard Gasquet por 3-6, 7-6 y 6-4 en casi dos horas y media de partido, y se medirá en octavos al canadiense Frank Dancevic.

Por otro lado, el suizo Roger Federer, número uno mundial y defensor del torneo, celebró su 26 cumpleaños con un difícil triunfo ante el croata Ivo Karlovic (7-6 y 7-6). Se enfrentará en octavos al italiano Fabio Fobigni, procedente de la fase de calificación.

Federer Prevails in Service Battle; Nadal Defeats Safin

Top seed and defending champion Roger Federer celebrated his 26th birthday on Wednesday in Montreal with a 7-6(2), 7-6(3) win in his second round opener against towering Croat Ivo Karlovic at the Rogers Masters.

Federer and Karlovic were forced to battle in two tie-breaks as both played near flawless service games without relinquishing any break point chances. Federer, who dropped just seven points total on serve, claimed both mini breaks of the first-set tie-break with crisp down-the-line passing shots past the ample wingspan of the 6' 10'' Karlovic. He withstood Karlovic's 16 aces to clinch the win in one hour and 23 minutes.

The Swiss extended his winning streak in Canada to 13 matches, having won the 2004 title and '06 title in Toronto in his last two event appearances. Federer's last loss in Canada came four years ago in his only previous showing in Montreal when he fell to Andy Roddick in the semifinals in a third set tie-break.

He will next confront Italian qualifier Fabio Fognini, who advanced to the third round in his second career ATP Masters Series appearance with wins over Canadian wild card Peter Polansky and No. 13 seed Andy Murray. The 20-year-old Fognini has reached three finals on the ATP Challenger circuit this season, and last week achieved a career-high ranking of No. 137.

Federer is playing in his first tournament since capturing his fifth straight Wimbledon crown on July 8. He has a 37-5 match record and four titles in six finals this season.

The Swiss was presented a birthday cake and serenaded with 'Happy Birthday' in French by fans.

World No. 2 Rafael Nadal, who claimed the Canada title in 2005 when the event was last held in Montreal, opened his Rogers Masters campaign Wednesday night with a 7-6(4), 6-0 victory in his first career meeting against former World No. 1 Marat Safin.

Safin failed to establish the early lead as he could not convert on his two break point chances at set point. Nadal promptly took control of the match as he won the first set tie-break and then held the Russian off the board the remainder of the way.

Nadal takes a 5-0 lifetime record into his third round match against Paul-Henri Mathieu, including a win over the Frenchman in the 2005 Montreal semifinals. Mathieu gave Mario Ancic a 6-3, 6-2 send-off in the Croat's first tournament since February. Both Nadal and Mathieu came to Montreal straight from title wins in their last tournament appearances, Nadal in Stuttgart and Mathieu in Gstaad.

Also on Wednesday evening, Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis dismissed 20-year-old Robin Haase in three sets to set up his third career meeting with American No. 1 Andy Roddick. Baghdatis is making his second appearance at ATP Masters Series Canada, and picked up his first win at this event by defeating Spaniard Carlos Moya on Tuesday.

WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID

Federer: "I think I played very well actually. I didn't give many chances on my own service game. From the baseline, I hardly missed a shot. I played aggressive. Yeah, I mean, I tried my best on his serve. But I had maybe a couple of chances, 30 All, deuce points. Came up with some good serving and, you know, I couldn't read his serve at all. I was happy the way I played tiebreakers, both of them. So for this reason, I think it was an excellent match."

On coming down from the Wimbledon high: "When you have three, four weeks ahead of you without any tournament, you kind of just relax, you enjoy the moment. After you start practicing again, you kind of forget what happened, you look forward and you arrive here, all of a sudden everybody talks about Wimbledon again. For me it's already kind of in the past. It's obviously very nice that the players haven't forgotten and they remind me. But, no, it goes fairly quickly. Sunk in. Already the fifth time. It's not like the first one."

Nadal: "Right now I have seven match in a row without losing here, so good, no (smiling)? 2005, I play very well, very good tournament all matches. Today is difficult play very good because Marat is touching the ball with unbelievable power every time, no? But I am there, I fight. In the end I can win, no?

"Yes, I know I have to improve something for tomorrow. I have to improve the serve. I have to improve play little bit more aggressive with the forehand. And that's it, no? I know that's important for try to win tomorrow. I'm going to work on that tomorrow morning."
